How to Style a Sideboard: Featuring the Westbrook Sideboard by Bush Home

Updated: Aug 7

To begin, start by measuring your sideboard, as this is crucial for choosing larger decorative items like art, mirrors, and lamps. Select an anchoring object, which will serve as a focal point. It should have a width of at least 1/2 the size of your sideboard, up to 2/3rds of the size. This object can be placed either in the center or off to one side. To calculate the size of your sideboard, measure its width in feet and multiply by .66. For a 5-foot sideboard, this equals 3.3 feet, which is 2/3 of the original size.

Next, choose two to three larger items. These items can have a similar height but should be taller and/or larger pieces such as a lamp, a vase, or an artificial plant. Position these items on either side of the sideboard to create a visually symmetrical appearance.

Next, include your smaller decorative items such as candles, small vases, books, and decorative objects. Remember to follow the rule of threes when arranging these items. An odd number of objects is more visually pleasing. When grouping your three items, consider their heights to avoid clustering items of the same size together, opting instead for items of different heights.

With glass doors, the Westbrook Sideboard provides an excellent chance to introduce texture by incorporating baskets for storage. This will result in a neat and organized appearance that can be admired through the glass.
